At the core of search engine optimization is Keywords and Keyphrases. For those with a basic understanding
of web site programming, the Title tag and Meta tags are necessary for a search engine to be to crawl
and index your site. When the search engine indexes your site, it will determine what your site is all
about by crawling through the content and your HTML tags. Theoretically, if your HTML tags are centered
around "Rear View Fuzzy Dice" your site will be listed when a user types in "Rear View Fuzzy Dice".
Don't we all wish it were that easy.
The most important thing to look at before any search engine optimization is done to your web site
is discussing the appropriate keywords and keyphrases with your search engine consultant. Doesn't
sound so hard, right? - Wrong. It is very common that a web site owner assume since they are selling fuzzy
dice that hangs on the rear view mirror that their keywords should be dice, rear view mirror, car
accessories, the company name, etc. Unfortunately, if you were to optimize your site for those keywords
and keyphrases, you may see your site in the search engines without a whole lot of time,
energy and all the backwards links money can buy.
How do you find out which are the right words? There are many ways to narrow down which keywords
and keyphrases will work for you. Many search engine professionals will use programs to measure the
amount of searches over the last month done for keywords. Then they will see what the competition
is for those specific words. Based upon those two figures, along with a couple other factors,
you and your search engine consultant will know which words to optimize for.
