If you own a local business in Connecticut, your Google Business Profile can be one of the first things potential customers see when they search for the products or services you provide.

But simply having a profile isn’t enough.

Outdated hours, incorrect categories, unanswered reviews, old photos, missing services, or inconsistent business information can make it harder for potential customers to understand—and choose—your business.

That’s why Google Business Profile optimization shouldn’t be a one-time project.

Use this Google Business Profile optimization checklist to audit your listing, strengthen your local presence, and make it easier for customers to find and contact your business.

1. Confirm Who Has Access to Your Google Business Profile

Start with something many businesses overlook: account access.

Businesses change employees, marketing companies, vendors, and ownership over time. Unfortunately, access to important marketing accounts doesn’t always get updated along the way.

Check your Google Business Profile and confirm:

☐ The appropriate business owner has the proper access

☐ Current marketing partners have the access they need

☐ Former employees no longer have unnecessary access

☐ Previous agencies or vendors have been removed when appropriate

☐ Access isn’t dependent entirely on one employee’s account

Knowing who controls your profile can prevent headaches later—especially if you need to make an urgent change.

2. Verify Your Business Name, Address and Phone Number

Your core business information should be accurate everywhere customers encounter your company.

Review:

☐ Business name

☐ Address, if displayed

☐ Phone number

☐ Website URL

☐ Service areas

☐ Business hours

Your Google Business Profile information should also be consistent with the information customers see on your website and other important business listings.

Avoid adding unnecessary keywords to your business name in an attempt to improve rankings. Your profile should accurately represent the name your business uses in the real world.

3. Review Your Primary and Secondary Categories

Your business categories help Google understand what your company actually does.

Start with your primary category.

Ask yourself:

Does this category accurately represent our main business?

Then review your secondary categories to determine whether important services are missing—or whether outdated and irrelevant categories should be removed.

For example, a business shouldn’t select every category remotely related to its industry simply because it wants to appear for more searches.

Focus on accuracy and relevance.

Quick category checklist:

☐ Primary category represents your core business

☐ Secondary categories reflect legitimate additional services

☐ Irrelevant categories have been removed

☐ Categories are reviewed periodically as your services evolve

4. Check Your Business Hours

Few things frustrate customers more than driving to a business that Google says is open—only to discover that it’s closed.

Review your:

☐ Regular business hours

☐ Weekend hours

☐ Holiday hours

☐ Seasonal hours

☐ Special hours

☐ Temporary closures

Make updating your Google Business Profile part of your routine whenever your operating hours change.

Accurate hours don’t just improve your profile. They improve the customer experience.

5. Complete Your Services and Business Information

A potential customer shouldn’t have to guess what your company does.

Depending on your business category and the features available to your profile, review your:

☐ Business description

☐ Services

☐ Products, when applicable

☐ Business attributes

☐ Appointment or booking links

☐ Website links

☐ Service areas

Use clear, natural language that helps customers understand your business.

This isn’t the place to cram dozens of keywords into every field.

Write for the customer first.

6. Audit Your Google Reviews

Reviews can heavily influence whether someone chooses your business or continues looking.

Your review strategy should therefore be ongoing.

Ask:

☐ Are we consistently receiving new reviews?

☐ Are we responding to reviews?

☐ Are there negative reviews that still need a thoughtful response?

☐ Do we have an easy process for requesting reviews?

☐ Are employees trained to ask satisfied customers for feedback?

☐ Are all reviews genuine and based on real customer experiences?

A simple review request process can make a significant difference over time.

Send satisfied customers directly to your review page through an email, text message, QR code, or follow-up communication.

One important rule: don’t buy reviews or offer incentives in exchange for positive Google Reviews.

Focus on earning authentic feedback from real customers.

For a deeper strategy, read our guide on How to Get More Google Reviews.

7. Refresh Your Photos and Videos

When was the last time you looked at the photos on your profile?

If most of them are several years old, it’s probably time for an update.

Consider adding:

☐ Current team photos

☐ Exterior photos

☐ Interior photos

☐ Recent projects

☐ Before-and-after examples

☐ Products

☐ Equipment or company vehicles

☐ Short videos

☐ Photos showing your team at work

Real photos can help customers understand what to expect from your business while making your profile feel current and active.

A Connecticut contractor, for example, might show recent local projects. A restaurant might feature new dishes. A professional services firm could introduce its team.

Show customers the real business behind the listing.

8. Publish Useful Google Business Profile Updates

Your profile doesn’t have to remain static.

When appropriate, use Google Business Profile updates to highlight information that may help someone considering your business.

Potential topics include:

Recent projects

Seasonal services

Company updates

Events

Helpful tips

New services

Special offers

Don’t post just for the sake of posting.

Instead, ask:

Would this information be useful to someone deciding whether to contact us?

If the answer is yes, it’s probably worth sharing.

9. Make Sure Your Website Supports Your Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile optimization doesn’t happen in isolation.

Your website and profile should reinforce one another.

Check that your website has:

☐ Accurate business contact information

☐ Clear service pages

☐ Useful location information

☐ Mobile-friendly design

☐ Fast-loading pages

☐ Logical internal links

☐ Clear calls to action

☐ Relevant local content

☐ Appropriate structured data where applicable

For Connecticut businesses, local relevance should also occur naturally throughout the website.

If you serve New Haven County, Hartford County, Fairfield County, or communities throughout Connecticut, explain where you actually work and what you provide there.

Avoid creating dozens of nearly identical city pages simply to insert different town names.

Useful local content should provide value beyond a ZIP code.

10. Check How Your Business Appears in Google Maps

Searching your company name isn’t enough.

Of course you’re likely to appear when someone already knows exactly who you are.

The bigger question is:

Do customers discover your business when they don’t know your name yet?

Think about searches such as:

“plumber near me”

“HVAC contractor in Wallingford CT”

“dentist in New Haven”

“SEO company Connecticut”

“roofing company near me”

Local search results can vary significantly depending on where the person searching is located.

That’s why local rank-tracking and map-grid tools can be valuable. They help businesses see how their Google Maps visibility changes across different geographic areas instead of relying on a single search from one location.

This is one of the reasons we use specialized Local SEO tools when evaluating local search performance.

11. Review Your Google Business Profile Performance

Don’t optimize your profile and then forget about it.

Review performance regularly to understand how customers are discovering and interacting with your business.

Depending on the data available for your profile, monitor metrics such as:

☐ Searches

☐ Profile views

☐ Website interactions

☐ Phone interactions

☐ Direction requests

☐ Other customer actions

Then compare performance over time.

Did visibility improve?

Are more people discovering the business?

Are those people taking meaningful actions?

Which searches appear to be driving visibility?

Optimization without measurement is guesswork.

Your Monthly Google Business Profile Optimization Checklist

You don’t need to rebuild your profile every month.

A quick monthly review can help catch problems before they become bigger issues.

MONTHLY GBP CHECKUP

☐ Verify your business name, address and phone number

☐ Review regular and special business hours

☐ Check your primary and secondary categories

☐ Review services and business information

☐ Upload recent photos

☐ Respond to new Google Reviews

☐ Request reviews from recent satisfied customers

☐ Check for outdated information

☐ Publish a useful update when appropriate

☐ Review Google Maps visibility

☐ Review profile performance

☐ Compare results with the previous month

Save this checklist and revisit it once a month.

Twenty minutes of maintenance can help prevent a Google Business Profile from becoming outdated while keeping your local presence aligned with your business.

Google Business Profile Optimization Is an Ongoing Process

Strong local visibility comes from maintaining accurate business information, earning authentic reviews, publishing useful content, improving your website, and consistently evaluating how customers find your business.

Frequently Asked Questions About Google Business Profile Optimization

How do I optimize my Google Business Profile?

Start by completing your business information, selecting accurate categories, adding your services and hours, uploading current photos, collecting authentic customer reviews, responding to reviews, and keeping your information updated. Your website and broader Local SEO strategy should also support the information on your profile.

How often should I update my Google Business Profile?

Review your profile at least monthly and update important information immediately whenever something changes. Business hours, holiday schedules, services, photos, contact information, and other customer-facing details should remain accurate.

Does Google Business Profile help with Local SEO?

Yes. A complete and accurate Google Business Profile is an important part of Local SEO and can help eligible businesses appear in Google Maps and local search results. Your overall local visibility also depends on factors such as relevance, distance, prominence, website optimization, reviews, and broader online authority.

Do Google Reviews help local rankings?

Reviews are important for both visibility and customer trust. Google considers review signals as part of local prominence, while potential customers often use ratings, review volume, recency, and the actual comments customers leave when deciding which business to contact.

Should I add keywords to my Google Business Profile name?

Only if those words are genuinely part of your real-world business name. Adding extra keywords solely to manipulate search rankings can violate Google’s Business Profile guidelines.

Why doesn’t my business rank everywhere in Google Maps?

Local search results aren’t identical everywhere. The searcher’s location matters, along with relevance and prominence. A business may rank strongly close to its location but become less visible as the searcher moves farther away. This is why evaluating Maps visibility from multiple geographic points can provide a more realistic picture of local performance.

For a step-by-step version of this, use our SEO checklist.

If you’re a Connecticut business owner looking to generate more leads, your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) may be one of the most valuable marketing tools you already have.

When customers search for services like “SEO company near me,” “plumber in Hartford,” or “marketing agency in New Haven,” Google often displays local businesses before traditional website results. An optimized Google Business Profile helps your business appear in Google Maps, local search results, and increasingly within AI-powered search experiences, making it easier for potential customers to call, visit, or request directions.

Whether you serve Hartford, New Haven, Stamford, Waterbury, Norwich, or communities across Connecticut, optimizing your profile can significantly improve your local visibility.

Complete Every Section of Your Google Business Profile

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is leaving their profile only partially completed.

Google recommends providing complete and accurate information so customers understand exactly what your business offers. This also helps Google determine when your business is relevant for local searches.

Be sure to complete all of the following:

Business Name

Primary Business Category

Secondary Categories

Business Description

Services

Products (if applicable)

Business Hours

Website URL

Phone Number

Service Areas

Business Attributes

The more complete your profile is, the better Google can match your business to relevant local searches.

Choose the Right Business Categories

Your primary business category is one of the strongest relevance signals in Google Business Profile.

Instead of choosing a broad category whenever possible, select the option that most accurately reflects your primary service. Google also recommends using only the categories necessary to describe your business rather than adding unnecessary ones.

For example:

Marketing Agency

SEO Consultant

HVAC Contractor

Personal Injury Attorney

Then add appropriate secondary categories where relevant.

Add High-Quality Photos That Build Trust

Customers are much more likely to contact businesses that look active and professional.

You should regularly upload:

Team photos

Office photos

Short videos

Reviews are one of the strongest trust signals for both customers and local search.

Encourage satisfied customers to leave honest reviews, and make responding to every review part of your regular marketing routine.

When responding, be sure to:

Reference your services naturally when appropriate.

Google notes that responding to reviews demonstrates that you value customer feedback, and positive reviews can help your business stand out in local search.

Instead, make it part of your monthly marketing routine.

Getting a one-star Google review can be frustrating, especially when you believe the customer’s version of events doesn’t tell the whole story.

Your first reaction might be to defend your business, explain exactly what happened, or simply ignore the review altogether. But before doing any of those things, remember one important point:

Your response isn’t only for the person who wrote the review. It’s for every potential customer who reads it afterward.

A professional response to a negative Google review gives your business an opportunity to demonstrate good customer service, provide appropriate context, and show prospective customers how you handle difficult situations.

So, should you respond? What should you say? And are there situations where you should try to have the review removed instead?

Should You Respond to a Negative Google Review?

In most cases, yes.

It may be tempting to ignore an occasional unreasonable review, particularly when your business has plenty of positive feedback. However, leaving a detailed complaint unanswered means prospective customers only see one side of the story.

The goal isn’t to win an argument with the reviewer. It’s to show everyone else reading that your business listens, responds professionally, and takes customer concerns seriously.

A good negative review response should:

Acknowledge the customer’s concern without automatically admitting wrongdoing.

Remain professional, even if the review isn’t.

Provide brief factual context when appropriate.

Avoid revealing private customer information.

Offer a reasonable next step if the issue can still be resolved.

Avoid turning the review section into a public argument.

How you respond should also depend on why the customer is unhappy.

Situation #1: Your Business Made a Mistake

Sometimes the customer has a legitimate complaint.

Perhaps an appointment was missed, communication broke down, an order was delayed, or the experience simply didn’t meet the standard your business normally provides.

If your company made a mistake, don’t become defensive. Acknowledge the problem and explain that you’d like the opportunity to address it.

Example response:

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We’re sorry that your experience didn’t meet the standard we strive to provide. We’ve reviewed the situation with our team and would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you directly to see how we can make things right.

Taking responsibility when appropriate can demonstrate something valuable to future customers: your business takes customer service seriously.

Situation #2: The Review Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story

This is where many business owners get themselves into trouble.

You know there’s another side to the story, so you’re tempted to write several paragraphs explaining exactly why the customer is wrong.

Resist the urge.

Instead, provide just enough factual context for someone reading the exchange to understand why your business made its decision.

For example:

We’re sorry our recommendation left you with that impression. In this situation, we recommended having the company performing the initial work complete the remaining portion as well so that one provider could be responsible for the finished project. We apologize if that recommendation wasn’t communicated clearly.

Notice what isn’t included: accusations, sarcasm, personal details, or an attempt to embarrass the reviewer.

You’re providing context—not starting a fight.

Situation #3: The Customer Is Unhappy With Your Price

Price-related complaints are common, particularly for businesses providing customized products or professional services.

A customer deciding that your price is too high doesn’t necessarily mean your company did anything wrong.

Don’t publicly defend every dollar of your estimate or criticize the less-expensive competitor the customer found.

Instead, reinforce the value behind your pricing.

Example response:

Thank you for considering our company. We understand that customers may receive different pricing when comparing providers. Our estimates reflect the materials, workmanship, expertise, and level of service included in each project, and we’re always happy to explain our recommendations and pricing before work begins.

This tells prospective customers that you stand behind your pricing without attacking the reviewer or your competitors.

Situation #4: You Can’t Identify the Reviewer as a Customer

What if someone leaves a negative review and nobody at your company recognizes the name or situation?

Don’t immediately accuse the reviewer of posting a fake review.

Respond professionally and give them an opportunity to provide more information.

Example response:

We’re concerned to see this review but haven’t been able to identify a customer or project matching the experience described. We’d appreciate the opportunity to investigate further. Please contact our office directly with your name and service details so we can look into the situation.

At the same time, evaluate whether the review may violate Google’s policies and qualify to be reported.

🔥 Hot Tip: Check for Personal Information Before You Respond

Before replying to a negative review, read it carefully.

Does it identify an employee or another individual while also revealing private or confidential information, making threats, harassing the individual, or sharing information that could create a risk of harm?

If so, the review may violate Google’s policies and could potentially qualify for removal.

However, an important distinction needs to be made:

Simply mentioning an employee’s name does not automatically mean Google will remove a review.

Instead, consider the context. If the review contains private or confidential information, threats, harassment, personal attacks, or other prohibited content involving an identifiable person, consider documenting and reporting it before getting into a public discussion.

Take a screenshot of the review first so you have a record of what was originally posted.

If Google determines that the content violates its policies, it may be removed. If Google initially determines that the review doesn’t violate its policies, businesses may have an opportunity to appeal the decision.

Situation #5: The Review Is Fake, Spam, Harassing, or Otherwise Violates Google Policies

Not every negative review deserves a response.

Google has policies governing user-generated content, including reviews. Content involving issues such as fake engagement, spam, harassment, personal attacks, certain types of personal information, or other prohibited material may qualify for removal.

If you believe a review violates Google’s policies:

Take a screenshot and document the review.

Report the review through your Google Business Profile.

Select the most accurate reason for reporting it.

Monitor the status of your removal request.

If Google determines there was no violation and an appeal is available, consider submitting an appeal.

There’s an important caveat: Google generally will not remove a review simply because the business disagrees with it or believes it’s unfair.

The review needs to violate an applicable Google policy.

Situation #6: The Reviewer Responds and Keeps Arguing

You’ve written a thoughtful response. The customer replies with another angry comment.

What now?

In many cases, the best move is simple:

Stop responding.

Your objective isn’t to have the last word.

Once you’ve provided an appropriate explanation or offered to address the issue privately, a prolonged public argument is unlikely to help your business.

Remember who your real audience is: prospective customers.

If they see a calm, professional business response followed by increasingly argumentative comments from the reviewer, they can form their own conclusions.

What NOT to Say When Responding to a Bad Google Review

Even if you’re certain the reviewer is wrong, avoid responses like:

“That’s not what happened.”

“You’re lying.”

“Nobody else has ever complained about this.”

“You were the problem.”

You should also avoid publishing invoices, emails, customer records, medical information, account information, or other private details simply to prove your side of the story.

And don’t write your response while you’re angry.

Draft it. Walk away for a few minutes. Then reread it from the perspective of someone considering doing business with your company.

Would that person see a professional business—or an argument?

That’s the test that matters.

Can a Bad Google Review Hurt Your Local SEO?

Google reviews are an important part of a business’s overall online presence and can influence how potential customers perceive the company.

But businesses shouldn’t become obsessed with maintaining a flawless 5.0-star rating.

A strong online reputation comes from building a consistent stream of authentic customer feedback over time and responding appropriately when something goes wrong.

One negative review surrounded by dozens or hundreds of positive customer experiences tells a very different story from a business with only a handful of reviews and multiple unresolved complaints.

That’s why online reputation management shouldn’t begin when you receive your first one-star review.

Businesses should have an ongoing strategy for monitoring reviews, responding to customers, keeping their Google Business Profile current, and encouraging genuine customers to share their experiences.

Should You Ask Happy Customers for More Google Reviews?

Absolutely—but do it ethically.

If your company consistently provides great service, make requesting reviews part of your normal customer follow-up process rather than waiting until a negative review appears.

The goal shouldn’t be to “bury” one unhappy customer with manufactured positive reviews. It should be to build an accurate representation of the experiences your customers are having.

Over time, a steady stream of genuine reviews provides potential customers with a much more complete picture of your business.

Turn a Bad Review Into an Opportunity

Nobody enjoys receiving a negative Google review.

But while you can’t control everything a customer says about your company, you can control how your business responds.

Stay factual. Stay professional. Don’t overshare. Correct important misconceptions without attacking the reviewer, and recognize when it’s time to stop responding.

Most importantly, remember:

You’re not just responding to one unhappy customer. You’re showing your next customer what kind of business you are.

At Keyword Performance, we help businesses improve their visibility across Google Search and local search while strengthening the online presence customers see when researching their options.

Google Reviews have become one of the most important factors influencing local search visibility, customer trust, and lead generation. Whether you’re a contractor, attorney, medical practice, home service provider, retailer, or professional service company, your online reputation can directly impact how many customers choose your business over a competitor.

If you’re wondering how to get more Google Reviews without violating Google’s policies, this guide will walk you through proven strategies that help businesses consistently generate authentic reviews while improving local SEO performance.

Why Google Reviews Matter for Local SEO

Google Reviews influence much more than customer perception.

Reviews help Google understand:

Business popularity

Customer satisfaction

Relevance within a local market

Trustworthiness

Service quality

Businesses with strong review profiles often perform better in:

Google Maps rankings

Local Pack results

Branded searches

Location-based searches

Mobile search results

Additionally, consumers often compare the quantity and quality of reviews before contacting a business.

A company with 150 reviews and a 4.8-star rating often earns more clicks than a competitor with only a handful of reviews.

How Many Google Reviews Do You Need?

There is no magic number.

The goal isn’t simply collecting reviews. It’s consistently earning new reviews over time.

For most local businesses, Google looks for signals such as:

Review frequency

Review recency

Review quality

Review diversity

Business responses

A steady flow of reviews is typically more valuable than receiving dozens all at once.

1. Simply Ask Your Customers

Many businesses fail to ask for reviews.

In reality, satisfied customers are often willing to leave feedback but need a reminder.

The best time to ask is immediately after:

Completing a service

Finishing a project

Delivering a product

Solving a problem

Receiving positive feedback

Timing is critical because customer satisfaction is highest immediately following a successful experience.

2. Create a Direct Google Review Link

Don’t make customers search for your business.

Generate a direct review link from your Google Business Profile and share it through:

Email

Text message

Invoices

Follow-up communications

Customer portals

Reducing friction significantly increases review completion rates.

3. Use Automated Review Requests

Businesses that consistently generate reviews often automate the process.

Review requests can be triggered after:

Completed appointments

Closed projects

Paid invoices

Service completion

Automation ensures every customer receives the same opportunity to leave feedback.

4. Train Your Team to Ask

Your employees interact with customers daily.

A simple request such as:

“If you were happy with our service today, we’d really appreciate a Google Review.”

can dramatically increase review volume.

Review generation should become part of your customer experience process.

5. Respond to Every Review

Google has confirmed that business engagement with reviews is a positive signal.

Responding demonstrates:

Professionalism

Customer service

Business activity

Community engagement

Thank customers for positive reviews and address concerns professionally when negative reviews occur.

6. Display Review Requests on Your Website

Your website receives traffic from existing customers, prospects, and referral sources.

Add review opportunities on:

Contact pages

Thank-you pages

Customer resource pages

Client portals

A visible review request creates additional opportunities to gather feedback.

7. Use QR Codes

QR codes simplify the review process.

Businesses can place review QR codes on:

Business cards

Service vehicles

Invoices

Reception desks

Product packaging

Customers simply scan and submit a review.

8. Make Reviews Part of Your Follow-Up Process

Most businesses already send follow-up emails.

Include a review request as part of:

Project completion emails

Customer satisfaction surveys

Thank-you messages

Service reminders

This creates a predictable review generation system.

9. Showcase Existing Reviews

People are more likely to leave reviews when they see others doing the same.

Highlight positive reviews on:

Your website

Social media profiles

Email newsletters

Sales presentations

This reinforces customer participation.

10. Focus on Customer Experience First

The easiest way to earn more reviews is by delivering exceptional service.

No review strategy can overcome:

Poor communication

Missed deadlines

Bad customer experiences

Businesses that consistently exceed expectations naturally generate more positive reviews.

11. Avoid Buying Reviews

Purchasing reviews violates Google’s policies and can damage your reputation.

Avoid:

Fake reviews

Review farms

Incentivized reviews

Review exchanges

Authentic reviews offer long-term value and foster genuine trust.

12. Monitor Your Online Reputation Regularly

Review management should be an ongoing process.

Track:

New reviews

Average rating

Customer feedback trends

Competitor review growth

Regular monitoring allows businesses to identify opportunities for improvement while protecting their online reputation.

How Google Reviews Impact Google Maps Rankings

Reviews are one of the strongest local SEO signals available to small businesses.

Google considers:

Review quantity

Review quality

Review frequency

Keyword relevance within reviews

Owner responses

Businesses that consistently earn positive reviews often improve visibility in Google Maps and local search results.

This is especially important for businesses competing in highly competitive local markets.

Google Reviews are no longer optional for businesses that want to dominate local search results. A consistent review acquisition strategy helps improve:

Google Maps visibility

Local SEO rankings

Customer trust

Click-through rates

Lead generation

The businesses that consistently ask for reviews, respond to customer feedback, and prioritize customer experience are often the same businesses that outperform competitors in local search.

If your business is struggling to generate reviews or improve local search visibility, developing a comprehensive Google Business Profile and Local SEO strategy can help you attract more customers and increase your online presence.

Alt text, or alternative text, is one of the most effective but often overlooked elements of on-page SEO. This simple description serves multiple functions, from improving accessibility to boosting your visibility in search engine rankings. Understanding how to optimize alt text for both users and search engines is more important than ever. In fact, Google’s John Mueller recently emphasized how alt text plays a crucial role in connecting images to their on-page context, making it a vital component of modern SEO strategies.

What is Alt Text?

Alt text is a brief description that conveys the content and purpose of an image. It is essential for accessibility because it helps visually impaired users understand what’s displayed on the screen through screen readers. For SEO, it provides search engines like Google with the information needed to index images and relate them to the context of the page they’re on.

In other words, alt text serves a dual purpose: it enhances user experience while improving your site’s chances of ranking higher in both web and image searches.

Why Alt Text Matters for SEO

Search engines can’t “see” images the way humans do, so they rely on alt text to understand the image’s content. By using descriptive and contextually relevant alt text, you’re helping search engines better interpret and rank your images, thereby improving your overall page ranking.

But simply stuffing alt text with keywords won’t cut it today. Google’s algorithms are becoming more sophisticated, focusing on context, relevance, and user experience. Alt text should accurately describe the image while seamlessly fitting into the overall context of the page. This approach will not only boost SEO but also enhance your content’s usability and relevance to users.

John Mueller’s Advice on Alt Text and Context

In a recent statement, Google’s John Mueller provided valuable insights on how to best use alt text. Responding to a question about alt text for SEO, Mueller explained:

“For image search, there’s the context that comes from the page + image combination that matters.

A photo of a beach might be a relaxing poster, it might be the beach from a hotel, it could be the site of a chemical spill. Just knowing that the image is of a beach doesn’t really give sufficient background information to be able to show it in image search appropriately. A lot of it does come from the page, and the alt-text is unique in that it’s what directly connects the image to the page with context.”

Mueller stressed that the alt text needs to provide the right context for both users and search engines. Using generic alt text like “photo of a beach” isn’t sufficient because it doesn’t tell the whole story. Instead, he suggested that alt text should offer a specific, meaningful description relevant to the page.

For example, a hotel website with an image of a beach should use alt text like “luxury beachfront hotel in Miami” rather than just “beach.” This approach aligns the image with the page’s purpose and ensures that the image is indexed properly for relevant search queries.

Best Practices for Writing Alt Text

In light of Mueller’s advice and the evolving nature of SEO, here are some best practices for writing effective alt text:

1. Be Descriptive, Yet Concise
Alt text should accurately describe what’s in the image without being too wordy. Keep it under 125 characters to ensure it’s readable for screen readers and easily parsed by search engines.

2. Use Contextually Relevant Keywords
Including keywords in your alt text can help with SEO, but only when done naturally. Avoid keyword stuffing, and make sure the alt text enhances the image’s relevance to the page. For example, on a travel website, a picture of a tropical beach might have alt text like “all-inclusive resort on a private beach in the Bahamas.”

3. Align with the Page’s Content
As Mueller highlighted, the image and alt text should align with the rest of the page’s content. For instance, if you’re selling hotel stays, the alt text should emphasize the hotel and its amenities, not just describe the image in isolation.

4. Avoid Using AI-Generated Alt Text without Editing
Mueller also cautioned against relying solely on AI to generate alt text. While AI might produce something like “photo of a beach,” it misses the opportunity to add meaningful context. Always review and edit AI-generated text to ensure it adds value for both users and search engines.

5. Enhance Accessibility
Remember, alt text is primarily for users with visual impairments. Describe the image in a way that helps them understand its relevance, and don’t forget to add context if the image plays a critical role in understanding the content on the page.

If your website traffic hasn’t dropped, but your leads feel different, you’re not imagining it. Search is changing fast. AI-driven experiences, such as Google AI Overviews, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, are reshaping how people discover businesses, evaluate trust, and make decisions. The result isn’t the death of SEO—but a clear evolution of it.

From here on, the businesses that win in search won’t be chasing hacks or shortcuts. They’ll be building visibility across both traditional search results and AI-powered answers, using strategy, authority, and human insight to stand out.

Here’s what SEO really looks like now—and what it should look like moving forward.

What Changed With AI Overviews (And What Didn’t)

Google’s AI Overviews introduced a new layer to search results. Instead of listing ten blue links and calling it a day, Google now often summarizes answers directly at the top of the page, pulling insights from multiple trusted sources.

What changed:

Fewer users need to click to get basic answers

Brand mentions and citations matter more than ever

Visibility is no longer limited to ranking positions alone

What didn’t change:

Google still relies on high-quality websites as its source material

Authority, accuracy, and expertise remain the foundation

Strong SEO fundamentals are still required to appear in AI-driven results

AI didn’t replace search engines—it built on top of them.

Why Ranking #1 Isn’t the Only Goal Anymore

For years, SEO success meant ranking first for a keyword. While rankings still matter, they’re no longer the whole story.

Today, visibility can come from:

Being cited in an AI Overview

Being referenced in AI-generated answers

Appearing as a trusted source across multiple queries

Owning topic authority rather than a single keyword

In many cases, businesses that never ranked #1 are now being surfaced in AI responses because they demonstrated clarity, depth, and trustworthiness across their content.

Modern SEO is about being the best answer, not just the highest-ranked page.

How Google Still Evaluates Trust, Authority & Relevance

Despite all the AI noise, Google’s core evaluation principles haven’t disappeared. In fact, they matter more than ever.

Google continues to prioritize:

Experience: Real-world knowledge and firsthand insights

Expertise: Demonstrated understanding of the topic

Authoritativeness: Strong brand signals, backlinks, and citations

Trustworthiness: Clear messaging, transparency, and accuracy

AI Overviews don’t invent information—they synthesize it from sources Google already trusts. If your website doesn’t clearly communicate who you are, what you do, and why you’re credible, AI search won’t surface you consistently.

Where AI Tools Fit (And Where They Don’t)

AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity are incredibly powerful—but they’re not SEO strategies on their own.

Where AI helps:

Content ideation and research

Identifying content gaps

Supporting keyword and topic clustering

Enhancing efficiency

Where AI falls short:

Understanding your business goals

Differentiating your brand voice

Applying local, industry-specific nuance

Building long-term authority and trust

The most effective SEO strategies use AI as a tool, not a replacement for human strategy. Automation can accelerate execution—but direction still matters.

Earlier this year (October specifically) was one of the most turbulent—and transformative—months in recent Google Search history. Between the broader global rollout of AI-generated answers, ongoing volatility from September’s major spam update, and new quality-evaluation systems powered by generative AI, businesses across every industry felt the impact.

For digital marketers, SEOs, and business owners, understanding these updates is critical for staying visible in an increasingly competitive and AI-driven search landscape.

Now that we’ve had some time to get familiar with the changes and test and analyze best practices, we’ve created a breakdown of the most important changes and how they may affect your website, content strategy, and long-term digital performance.

AI Mode Expansion to 40+ Countries and 35 Languages

The most significant confirmed rollout was the expansion of Google’s “AI Mode”—also known as AI Overviews—on October 8, 2025. This update represents yet another shift away from Google’s traditional list-style search results toward AI-generated summaries.

These summaries pull from high-quality sources across the web and place them at the top of search results, often reducing the visibility of the organic blue links below. For businesses and publishers, this means:

Content must be structured and written in a way that is easily extractable, fact-rich, and experience-driven.

Pages must directly answer user intent to be included as a cited source within the AI summary.

Sites relying solely on keyword-stuffed or surface-level content are far less likely to appear in these new formats.

The expansion also affects mobile search results, where AI Overviews now dominate above-the-fold real estate. This creates a heightened need for strong schema markup, page speed optimization, and mobile-friendly formatting.

Post-Spam Update Volatility and Ongoing Rebalancing

Although Google’s major spam update finished rolling out in late September, its influence carried heavily into October. Many sites continued to experience dramatic ranking declines due to:

Scaled or AI-generated low-quality content

Manipulative backlink schemes

Thin or duplicate landing pages

Google appears to be in a prolonged “rebalancing” phase, evaluating site-wide quality using new machine learning systems designed to detect spammy or inauthentic practices better.

Sites hit by this rebalancing often saw:

De-indexing of older low-value pages

Deprecation of entire content clusters

Lower trust evaluations for backlink patterns

E-E-A-T Becomes Even More Central to Ranking

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) were once again front and center in October. Google deployed more advanced AI systems to assess:

Firsthand experience

Depth and originality of analysis

Presence of author profiles

Citation of trusted sources

Brand reputation across the web

Generic or templated content saw ranking drops, while detailed, unique, human-authored content was rewarded—especially content that solves a user problem or shares personal expertise.

Unconfirmed SERP Volatility: October 10 and 15–18

Several independent SEO tracking tools reported extreme volatility spikes around:

October 10

October 15–18

Although Google did not confirm algorithm updates on these dates, the patterns strongly suggest continued refinement of ranking systems tied to the September spam update and AI Mode expansion.

Industries hit hardest included:

Local service businesses

E-commerce retailers

Sites relying heavily on AI-generated content

Niches with high competition or misinformation risks

URL Handling & Reporting Adjustments in Search Console

Google made backend changes to how URL parameters are processed, including eliminating the widely used num=100 parameter, causing disruptions for rank-tracking tools.

Additionally, many users experienced:

Delayed reporting

Data “freeze” periods

Temporary gaps in insights for impressions/clicks

This made it harder to evaluate daily performance fluctuations during a month already full of volatility.

Local SEO Tightening and Stricter GBP Enforcement

Google also tightened enforcement of Google Business Profile (GBP) rules. Businesses engaging in:

Keyword-stuffed business names

Fake or incentivized reviews

Service-area misrepresentation

…risked warnings or full suspensions throughout October. This had a notable effect on both desktop and mobile local search visibility, especially in competitive industries like contractors, law firms, and home services.

How Keyword Performance Is Helping Businesses Navigate These Changes

At Keyword Performance LLC, we’ve been proactively adjusting strategies to ensure our clients stay ahead of these updates. Here’s how we’re helping businesses maintain and grow their visibility:

Optimizing for AI Overviews and Google’s new AI Mode, restructuring content to be more answer-driven, factual, and experience-based.

Auditing thin content clusters and rebuilding pages with deeper expertise and better user intent alignment.

Strengthening E-E-A-T signals with author bios, external citations, client case studies, and firsthand expertise.

Improving mobile search performance with faster load speeds, cleaner layouts, and AI-optimized mobile formatting.

Enhancing Local SEO compliance for Google Business Profiles to protect against suspensions and ranking losses.

Upgrading tracking systems as Search Console and URL parameters evolve, ensuring continued clarity in analytics.

Supporting paid traffic strategies, including the growing Demand Gen campaigns inside Google Ads, to help offset organic volatility when needed.

The biggest theme of Google’s updates is clear: Google’s AI-powered search era rewards authentic expertise and penalizes shortcuts. At Keyword Performance, we’re helping businesses adapt, stay visible, and continue growing in this new landscape.

The world of search is shifting fast, and artificial intelligence is leading the charge. With the rollout of Google’s AI Overviews, we’re seeing major changes in how search results appear, how users interact with them, and how businesses like yours need to respond.

At Keyword Performance, we’ve always stayed one step ahead of Google’s algorithm updates—and now, we’re adapting to the rise of AI in search with the same forward-thinking approach.

So, what’s actually happening?

If you’ve recently noticed a dip in your website traffic, you’re not alone. AI-generated answers (called AI Overviews) are showing up at the top of more search results, summarizing information and answering questions directly, before a user even clicks a link.

This means fewer clicks to traditional websites, especially for broad, informational queries.

The data tells the story:

Ahrefs found that when AI Overviews appear, the top-ranking pages get 34.5% fewer clicks.

Amsive reported an average 15.49% drop in click-through rates (CTR) when AI Overviews are on the page.

Similarweb found 20% fewer clicks on search results with AI Overviews.

Put simply, AI is giving users quick answers, but taking away some of the traffic that would have gone to your website.

What can businesses do about it?

Don’t panic—adapt. There are still plenty of opportunities to succeed in this new landscape. Here’s how we’re helping our clients stay visible, valuable, and competitive:

✅ 1. Writing Content AI Wants to Show

We’re creating deeper, more informative content that goes beyond surface-level answers. AI tools prefer content that shows expertise, context, and clear reasoning—not just quick tips.

✅ 2. Optimizing for Real Conversations

People are searching more naturally now, asking full questions instead of just typing keywords. We’re optimizing for those longer, more conversational queries that AI and voice search love.

✅ 3. Structuring Content So AI Can Understand It

We use headings, lists, tables, and schema markup to make content easy to read for both humans and AI tools. This helps increase the chance that your site will be featured, quoted, or ranked well.

✅ 4. Focusing on Trust and Expertise (E-E-A-T)

Content that’s trustworthy, written by experts, and backed by real knowledge will continue to outperform thin or generic content. That’s why everything we create is designed to build Expertise, Experience, Authority, and Trust.

✅ 5. Using AI to Beat AI

We’re also using AI-powered tools (like ChatGPT, Ahrefs, and SEMrush) to optimize faster, smarter, and with better insights. These tools help us brainstorm content, monitor rankings, and track AI-driven trends in real time.

Yes, AI is changing the game—but that doesn’t mean your SEO strategy is doomed.

Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) is an AI-powered enhancement to search results, designed to provide more interactive and human-like responses to user queries. Unlike a chatbot, SGE integrates AI-generated answers directly into Google’s search results. You may have noticed this already happening across the web and expect to see much more of it as its popularity increases.

How Does SGE Work?

When you perform a search, SGE creates a compact and highly relevant answer at the top of the search results page. This AI-generated snippet includes links to other sources and ways to dig deeper and explore the topic further. The goal is to make search interactions clearer and more engaging. That means instead of having to scroll through tons of search results hoping to find the answer you need – this presents the information right in view without having to do all the digging or clicking. Great for users, but still questionable how great it is for us SEO masters.

Google’s SGE Impact on SEO

As SGE becomes more common, it will influence how users interact with search engines and how websites optimize their content. Businesses are investing heavily in this technology, with the AI market projected to grow significantly in the coming years. So there is no way around the giant. We must adapt and grow in the digital marketing landscape as well. While it might be too early for definitive optimization strategies, here are some tips offered by industry experts:

Answer User Queries Directly: Create content that provides clear, and thorough answers to user questions.

Provide Expert Analysis: SGE pulls information from multiple sources, so offering expert opinions or analysis in your content may improve visibility.

Use Direct Language: Organize content into sections, lists, and bullet points for easier understanding by the AI tools.

Focus on Topical Authority: Be a niche or topical authority within your industry to increase the chances of being referenced in SGE snippets.

Share New Information: Publish freshly researched and important primary data and analysis to stand out in the sea of content.

Traditional SEO Still Matters!

Despite the rise of AI-generated results, traditional SEO practices remain important. Many web users will continue to engage with conventional search results displayed alongside SGE snippets and they are a market you cannot afford to miss out on. So ensuring you’re working with a digital marketing firm that has the tools to monitor and implement tactics for all users is key. At Keyword Performance we are closely monitoring AI and its effect on SEO and continue to invest heavily in tools and education to produce positive results for clients. As the shift towards a more interactive and intuitive search experience online happens, we are here to help you navigate the waters and deliver the best experience for users.

Google recently announced that it would be rolling out changes to how-to-rich and FAQ-rich results. The changes aim to give users cleaner results and a more consistent experience when they search.

What Are Rich Results?

Google Rich Results prominently feature certain types of content and help drive extra traffic to websites. However, publishers have to create extra content and structured data to trigger rich results.

What Is Different Now?

Under the new policy, Google will only show FAQ-rich results for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. As a result, other websites that don’t meet those criteria won’t regularly see FAQ rich results.

If you don’t operate an authoritative government or health website, you can remove FAQ rich data from your website. However, you don’t have to. In fact, leaving that structured data as is won’t cause problems or have any visible effect in Google Search.

Google has also decided to stop displaying how-to rich results. At first, the company stated that the change would only apply to mobile versions of websites. Later, it issued an update that said the change would also apply to desktop versions.

Google rolled out the updates around the world, and they affect all countries and websites in all languages. Still, Google noted that you should not view these changes as a ranking change.

What Does This Mean for You?

If these updates affect you, you’ll most likely see changes when you review your website’s Google Search Console reporting. In particular, check your performance report’s metrics for FAQ and How-To search appearances. Also check the number of impressions listed in your enhancement reports. However, you shouldn’t see a difference in the number of items reported in your enhancement reports.

Get Professional Help with Your Company’s Website

It can be difficult to understand how Google’s search algorithm works. It can also be hard to see how recent changes like these affect your business. At Keyword Performance, we stay on top of updates and trends to provide our clients with the best results possible. We can explain what these recent changes mean. Then we can work with you to help your company thrive in an ever-changing landscape.

Our team can create original content for your website and update existing content. We can also suggest ways to make your website more user-friendly, increase traffic, and boost conversions. We work with companies of varying sizes in a wide array of industries. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help your business.

Website design choices affect how Google displays FAQ and how-to content.

Google’s SEO Starter Guide is a good companion to this article.
